NOVEMBER 2024: Os Sonhos Continuam (The Dreams Continue), directed by the Rodrigues sisters, Marlee and Karlee Rodrigues, is now streaming on SIC OPTO following its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.

SIC OPTO, the streaming service launched by the Portuguese media group SIC (Sociedade Independente de Comunicação), aims to provide premium content focused on Portuguese-speaking audiences globally. The platform offers a range of exclusive programming, including dramas, series, news, and content from SIC's existing television channels like SIC Notícias. It was designed not only to serve audiences in Portugal but also to cater to the Portuguese-speaking diaspora, with some international options, including SIC's news and thematic content.

OCTOBER 2024: Os Sonhos Continuam (The Dreams Continue), Cinemanas’ newest film, makes its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival 2024 on Friday evening, October 18th. Tribeca Festival Lisboa 2024 marks an exciting milestone for Portuguese cinema, bringing together the best of global independent cinema.

Directed by the Rodrigues sisters, the film is an intimate portrait of the generational impact of immigration.

Fleeing the Portuguese dictatorship and immigrating to the U.S. doesn’t keep Maria from dancing. 50 years later, the threat of cultural loss brings her granddaughter home to dance in their folk troupe.

Karlee Rodrigues at Gotham Week 2024

October 2024: At Gotham Week 2024, Karlee Rodrigues joins the Screening Committee for the “Spotlight on Documentaries” program, where she has helped evaluate a range of compelling nonfiction films. Spotlight on Documentaries is the largest project market for in-development non-fiction work in the United States.

Karlee is also actively involved in the Project Market, specifically within the Global Producers Hub where she is listening to international narrative fiction pitches, connecting with global filmmakers and producers. Gotham Week’s Project Market is the nation’s oldest and largest curated marketplace for film and TV creators. In an effort to nurture both emerging and established talent, the Project Market opens doors for groundbreaking film and media creators to build career-spanning relationships with distributors, financiers, production companies, festival programmers, sales and talent agents, and collaborators.

SEPTEMBER 2024: Tribeca Enterprises has unveiled the lineup for the inaugural edition of Tribeca Festival Lisboa with the first European iteration of the NYC fest set to unspool in the Portuguese capital October 17-19 with a mix of U.S. indies, Portuguese films, series, podcasts and talks with international and local luminaries.

U.S. features hitting Lisbon include winners from the 2024 festival circuit Anora (Cannes), Griffin in Summer (Tribeca Festival), In the Summers (Sundance)and Bob Trevino Likes It (SXSW) as well as Portuguese rising talent with César Mourão’s feature narrative Podia Ter Esperado Por Agosto, anticipated series Azul, and short films O Afinador de Silêncios, Era Uma Vez No Apocalipse and Os Sonhos Continuam.

Post-production Underway for “Os Sonhos Continuam”

APRIL 2024: Post-production is underway for a new short documentary, OS SONHOS CONTINUAM (“The Dreams Continue”), named after the rancho folclórico led by António Cardoso in New Jersey. The filmmakers, Marlee and Karlee Rodrigues (the Rodrigues Sisters), danced in the rancho growing up and brought a film crew to Sport Club Português in Newark, N.J. to capture the traditional songs and dance, rarely seen in cinema. Apple Blossoms Screens at Annapolis Film Festival

Hispanic Heritage Month Conversation with Moisés Zamora Moderated by Marlee Rodrigues

OCTOBER 2023: LAFS celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by hosting a conversation with Moisés Zamora, the creator, executive producer and co-showrunner of global-hit Selena: The Series on Netflix. Moises also introduced Videomart, an innovative platform that aims to disrupt Hollywood by betting on diversity and emerging voices through a blockchain-powered business model that benefits the independent filmmaker. The conversation was joined by LAFS alum and filmmaker Alex Ferrufino and was moderated by Marlee Rodrigues.

NoHo Cinefest's Post-Strike Writers' Panel

SEPTEMBER 2023: Cinemanas’ Karlee Rodrigues moderated a post-WGA strike writers’ panel at the North Hollywood Cinefest. Among the topics of conversation were expectations for the industry post-strike as well as paths to the Blacklist, best practices in giving and receiving notes, and writers room debriefs.

Marlee Joins Entrepreneurship in Entertainment Panel

NOVEMBER 14 2022: Cinemanas co-founder Marlee Rodrigues was invited as a guest panelist on “Entrepreneurs in Entertainment” for USC’s Business of Entertainment Association. Topics of discussion included discussion of the guest panelists’ backgrounds and company missions, how they started their ventures, taking on investments, and greatest lessons learned in founding.

When asked about the challenges faced and lessons learned from those challenges, Rodrigues emphasized the importance of a solid team, “Not just a founding team but key partners, collaborators, and even supporters in your personal life that align with not only your goals but your path in getting there.”

Other panelists included Remington Scott, founder of leading Metaverse Studio Hyperreal, and Brandon Bauman, founder the social experience providing ultimate entertainment content sharing and discovery solutions, ZinBin. The panel was moderated by MBA student and co-founder of Thumbo, a live sports audience engagement software.
